Hot Toys Iron Man 2: Mark V Collectible Figure PREVIEW

Official pictures released of Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Series (MMS145) Iron Man 2: 1/6th scale Mark V Limited Edition Collectible Figurine from the "Iron Man 2" movie. The movie-accurate Mark V collectible is highly detailed, highlighting the light-up function, detailed armor, additional battle damaged parts, suitcase and light-up figure stand.

Blast from the Past #2: Terraz the Tamer and Silver Surfer!

This figure brought back memories for me :) memories of a time when I was into comics and one of my favorite comic artists was John Bryne. I was first hooked on Bryne's work on a copy of X-Men (but that's for another post) and picked up Fantastic Four when he took over the reigns.

John Byrne's better-known work has been on Marvel Comics’ X-Men and Fantastic Four and the 1986 relaunch of DC Comics’ Superman franchise. Coming into the comics profession exclusively as a penciler, Byrne began co-plotting the X-Men comics during his tenure on them, and launched his writing career in earnest with Fantastic Four (where he also started inking his own pencils). 1:6 Bruce Willis as John McClane from Die Hard - FINAL version

This will be the final look of my 1:6 scale Bruce Willis as John McClane 12-inch figure from DIE HARD. I wasn't totally happy with the overly dirtied shirt that Brother Production included with their Natural Born Hero Series 001 New York Detective "Dirty Johnny" 1:6 scale figure (worldwide limited to 150 pieces) which I'd reviewed earlier HERE, so I switched shirts and included a few other items.

New product: MILITARY GIRL - GERMANY: CAMY 1/6 scale action figure

continued from a previous post...

In the 2009 war film "Inglourious Basterds" written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, Brad Pitt as First Lieutenant Aldo Raine is tasked to recruit a team of eight Jewish-American soldiers for a mission to go behind enemy lines and bring fear to all German servicemen. He tells the soldiers that they each owe him one hundred Nazi scalps.

I'm sure Aldo the Apache would be most happy to have his hands on this particular German Fräulein ;p

These pictures taken of the Hot Toys 10th Anniversary Exhibition in Tokyo (a big THANK YOU to the guys who were there and took pictures and shared them) have been floating around on the internet and it has thrown up quite a few surprises and lots of expectations for 2011 :)

First - the usual suspects: Iron Man Mark V and Mark VI plus a host of other upcoming releases we have already seen in pre-released pictures such as Ghost Rider, SGT Barnes from Platoon, T-800 from Terminator, Barney Ross from Expandables etc etc

Happy Boxing Day!

When I first told my boys that the day after Christmas Day is called Boxing Day in some countries, they got really excited. The questions came fast and furious: "Really? A day reserved just for boxing?" "Who gets to punch first?" "Do we get to box each other?"

Boxing Day is a bank or public holiday that occurs on 26 December and is observed in Australia, Austria, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and in some Commonwealth of Nations that have a mainly Christian population. In South Africa, the public holiday 26 December is called Day of Goodwill, in Ireland St Stephen's Day or Lá an Dreoilín, and in continental European countries the "Second Christmas Day." [source: wiki]

Traditionally, 26 December was the day to open the Christmas Box to share the contents with the poor. An 'Alms Box' was placed in every church on Christmas Day, into which worshippers placed a gift for the poor of the parish. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas, which is why that day became know as Boxing Day.

Well, pictures have been circulating of a BOXING figure by Storm Toys - "Champion Tyson"

Brother Production "Dirty Johnny" (Bruce Willis as John McClane) REVIEW II

continued from an earlier post...

John McClane is a fictional character and the protagonist in the Die Hard series of films. He is portrayed by actor Bruce Willis in the four films, beginning with Die Hard in 1988. He is described as being a foul-mouthed, wisecracking, no-nonsense New York cop with an itchy trigger finger, an aversion to Eurotrash terrorists, and a never-say-die spirit. [source: wiki]

This is the recently released Brother Production Presents Natural Born Hero Series 001 New York Detective "Dirty Johnny" 1:6 scale 12-inch figure (worldwide limited to 150 pieces) with a very distinct Bruce Willis head sculpt. Here's a shot of him without his shirt, wearing just his undershirt (tank top / singlet), shoulder holster with Beretta 92FS pistol and a spare pistol magazine in the double magazine pouch, Police Badge, watch, pants with leather belt, socks and shoes.

In the third film, "Die Hard with a Vengeance", McClane is back in New York. He must solve a number of riddles and challenges put to him by terrorist Simon Peter Gruber (Jeremy Irons) in order to keep the bombs from going off.

Hot Toys "Iron Man 2" Mark V coming soon!

Released: Hot Toys teaser pictures of the Movie Masterpiece 1/6 scale Iron Man Mark V iron suit from the "Iron Man 2" film

Mark V: Introduced in the second film is the Mark V travel armor, a portable suit developed for emergency use, likely made in the six month time gap. This armor is shown to be durable enough to withstand the focused repulsor energy of Vanko's energy whip attacks, though it sustained heavy internal and external damage. While this model features the palm-mounted repulsors, any potential flight capability is not shown. [source: wiki]

Brother Production New York Detective "Dirty Johnny" REVIEW 1

This is the recently released Brother Production Presents Natural Born Hero Series 001 New York Detective "Dirty Johnny" 1:6 scale 12-inch figure (worldwide limited to 150 pieces). On closer inspection, this is essentially a 1:6 scale Bruce Willis as NYPD detective John McClane 12-inch figure from "Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995)", the third film in the action series "Die Hard".

The movie starred Bruce Willis as NYPD detective John McClane, Samuel L. Jackson as McClane's reluctant partner Zeus Carver, and Jeremy Irons as the main villain Simon Peter Gruber. It was released on May 19, 1995.

Cadillac One

The Presidential State Car is the official state car used by the President of the United States. The most recent vehicle to be customized as the presidential car is a GMC Topkick-based, Cadillac-badged limousine often referred to as "Cadillac One" (a reference to the U.S. presidential aircraft, Air Force One) or as "The Beast."

The current presidential limousine entered service on January 20, 2009. According to the manufacturer, General Motors, the "2009 Cadillac Presidential Limousine" is the first not to carry a specific model name. The vehicle's outward appearance carries many current Cadillac styling themes, but doesn't exactly resemble any particular production vehicle. Although a price tag has not been announced, according to London-based newspaper The Guardian, each limousine cost the U.S. tax payers US$300,000.

Ever wonder how other than the 20-car trail of bodyguard vehicles , the president is protected. Well, check out this x-ray illustration of his fully loaded US$300,000 Cadillac One. Click on the picture for a bigger and better view :)

Hot Toys Berserker Predator, Classic Predator & Royce

All these three characters appeared in the latest Predator film of 2010 aptly called "Predators" directed by Nimród Antal and starring Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Oleg Taktarov and Louis Ozawa Changchien. It is the fifth film in the Predator franchise, following "Predator (1987)", "Predator 2 (1990)", and the crossover films "Alien vs. Predator (2004)" and "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)".

The Berserker Predator is identified by an alien mandible attached to its helmet and faces off against Royce in the film's climax. The Classic Predator is designed to resemble the creature in the original Predator film. Royce (Adrien Brody) is an American ex-military soldier turned mercenary who reluctantly assumes leadership of the group of humans stranded on the alien planet.

I wanted to show the size comparisons of Hot Toys MMS (Movie Masterpiece Series) 1/6 scale Berserker Predator, Classic Predator and Royce after having reviewed them all (You can check out the reviews on the left side bar). Scroll down this post for pictures of these three standing side-by-side to get an idea of the size / height differences, in 1/6 scale of course and hopefully, movie-accurate as well.

Hot Toys Berserker Predator REVIEW III

continued from the previous post...

The Predator design is credited to special effects artist Stan Winston. While flying to Japan with "Aliens" director James Cameron, Winston, who had been hired to design the Predator, was doing concept art on the flight. Cameron saw what he was drawing and said, "I always wanted to see something with mandibles". Winston then included them in his designs. [source: wiki]

The Predators are depicted as large, sapient and sentient humanoid creatures who possess advanced technology, such as active camouflage and energy weapons, and are capable of interstellar travel.

First introduced in 1987 as the main antagonist of the film "Predator",  the alien Predator has taken on many new appearances, the latest being the "Black Super Predators" and we only get to see the Berserker Predator's face towards the end of the movie. And I thought they couldn't get any uglier.

Hot Toys Berserker Predator REVIEW II

Having seen the box packaging, basic Berserker Predator out of the box and the contents including accessories in the earlier post, now let's see how the Hot Toys MMS130 (Movie Masterpiece Series) 1/6th scale 14-inch tall Berserker Predator Collectible Figure from the "Predators (2010)" movie looks like with its mask on.

The Predator's hunting helmet (also called Bio Mask) increases its ability to see in a variety of spectrums, ranging from the low infrared to the high ultraviolet, and also filters the ambient heat from the area, allowing them to see things with greater clarity and detail. Housed within the helmet is a targeting and tracking system for the shoulder-mounted energy weapon or plasma casters.

These "Black Super Predators" from "Predators (2010)" are more superior to the classic alien Predators and apparently there is a blood-feud occurring between two different tribes of Predator.

New from DID: French Foreign Legion 2nd BEP, Indochina 1954

Finally, a 1/6 scale 12-inch military figure that isn't a US Navy SEAL, DEVGRU, US Army Ranger, US Marine or WWII German soldier. This is a totally new figure - as in, never been done before in this scale (as far as I know). DID will be releasing a French Foreign Legion 2nd BEP military action figure as he was in 1954 Indochina. It's always easier to go back to historical figures because you cannot get it wrong. Any modern soldier released now would become outdated in a year's time as the equipment and weapon used might be upgraded or improved upon. Sometimes even the uniform / outfit changes - the US Army switched from ACU to Multicam in a few short years. So anything considered "modern" never is.

The Légionnaire 2ème BEP Indochine 1954 or French Foreign Legion 2nd BEP Indochina 1954 "Marcel"figure comes with bush hat, beret, US Helmet with french paratrooper strap, French lizard camouflage para uniform, MAS pouches, French first aid pouch on shoulder, French grenade, MAS 36 Cr39 with bayonet and folding stock, French Mac 50 gun with holster, French Pataugas canvas boots and many more items that have never been done before :)

Surprise Buy @ STGCC 2010: Mattel Batman Batcave Playset

This was a totally unexpected buy for me :) I was invited to the Media Preview at the Singapore Toy, Games & Comic Convention (STGCC) 2010 on Friday December 10, 2010 from 10 am along with a few other prominent bloggers of note before the show / exhibition opened to the public from 12 noon. Being early meant that I get to browse and check out all the exhibits before the throngs of people (ah! the benefits of having a blog :>) so I enjoyed the sights and took it all in and took some pictures as well - you can see my blog posts / entries of the STGCC in my previous posts.

I saw this Mattel Batman Batcave playset on the first day of STGCC. The box itself measures 23 inches long (58.5 cm) by 12.5 inches high (32 cm) and 9 inches wide (23 cm). It was going for SGD45 which seemed like a pretty good deal but I had set my eyes on the Soldier Story STGCC Expo exclusive: the 1:6 scale US Army 10th Special Forces Group (SFG) operator (previewed earlier HERE) and stuck with that. I happened to go back again on Sunday (last day of STGCC) - thanks to the media pass, no entrance fee / ticket required as I had free roam for all three days - and saw that this playset was now selling for SGD20 which was a steal to me, so I bought it.

I've stopped collecting smaller scale figures and carded figures (3 3/4 inches) for a while now, preferring the more detailed and highly realistic 1/6 scale figures with fabric outfits and clothing including weapons and accessories. However, once in a while, there comes a toy that catches my attention and is just too good to resist and I find myself drawn to it. This was just one of those times. Another most recent purchase was the Avatar AMP - Amplified Mobility Platform (reviewed HERE) which was a MUST HAVE for what it can do and represented.

STGCC 2010 Sets the Pace for Pop Culture Growth in Region

Media Release:
Singapore, 13 December 2010 – Pop culture is projected to grow in the region, with keen fans helping to boost the industry in Singapore and regionally. This was the view of industry professionals after the Singapore Toy, Games & Comic Convention (STGCC) 2010 ended its three-day run yesterday. Over 28,000 visitors, with a visitorship of 72,000, flocked to the show and gave the thumbs up to the quality and variety of the anime, manga, comics, toys, live performances and panel and academic discussions.

For some fans, it was a dream come true that so many of their idols were here in Singapore. Roshadiyanto Bin Ibrahim, 24, had been first in the queue for all three days, turning up everyday at 6am. He is a big Marvel fan and “I never thought that they would come to this part of the world. It’s like a dream come true!”

The show’s ‘East meets West’ flavour featuring personalities and artists from the US, Europe and Asia was a major draw for fans. Many agreed that the top-line content this year, like the artists, writers and illustrators from Marvel Comics and popular toy designers from Hong Kong and Japan appearing at one event made the experience unique.

“STGCC is a world-class pop culture event in one of the most amazing places on Earth. I can’t wait to come back!” said Gail Simone, critically-respected comics writer best-known for her work in Wonder Woman, Secret Six and Birds of Prey.

Barbie: FBI's most wanted?

Has Barbie become one of the FBI's Most Wanted?

This article appeared in the newspapers on December 9, 2010 and I thought it was worth mentioning on this blog. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued an alert recently about Video Girl Barbie, which it says could be used by paedophiles to entice children and make child pornography.

Seen @ STGCC 2010: Vinyl Art & Pop Culture

continued from the previous post...

The 2010 Singapore Toy, Games and Comic Convention (STGCC) which is on from December 10 till December 12 at the Suntec International Convention Centre (Hall 401 and 402) brands itself as the ultimate Pop Culture experience. Well, you cannot have pop culture without vinyl art so here are some of those that caught my attention.

Bearbrick Batman - large & XXXL (SUPER large!). Bearbrick (spelled Be@rbrick) is a collectible toy designed and produced by the Japanese company MediCom Toy Incorporated. The name is derived from the fact that the figure is a cartoon-style representation of a bear, and that it is a variation of MediCom's Kubrick design.

The figure is an anthropomorphized bear with an extremely simplified form and a pot belly. Each plastic figure features nine parts (widely referred to as tools in the toy industry): head, torso, hips, arms, hands, and legs; These nine tools allow eight points of articulation: swivel head, swivel waist, ball joint arms, swivel wrists, and ball joint legs. [source: wiki]

Seen @ STGCC 2010: Star Wars

The 2010 Singapore Toy, Games and Comic Convention (STGCC) started today at the Suntec International Convention Centre, Hall 401 and 402. There are many exhibitors, illustrators, and all things to do with Toys, Games and Comics at the convention from today Dec 10 till Sunday December 12, 2010. Among the many exhibitions and themes at the STGCC 2010, Star Wars certainly made their presence felt! You can feel the force with these ones :)

The guys from the 501st Legion (Singapore Garrison) were there and there's even a moving, talking, flashing lights 1:1 scale R2-D2 for photo-taking opportunity. This year, there's even a proper backdrop for a more screen-realistic picture.

And then there are these awesome displays for all to see. The diorama is HUGE. There's a whole hangar set-up and another of the epic battle that took place on on the remote ice planet Hoth.

Hot Toys Berserker Predator REVIEW 1

This is recently released Hot Toys MMS130 (Movie Masterpiece Series) 1/6th scale 14-inch tall Berserker Predator Collectible Figure from the "Predators (2010)" movie. "Predators", a 2010 American science fiction action-horror film directed by Nimród Antal, is a sequel to "Predator (1987)" and "Predator 2 (1990)" and avoids any mention of the Alien Franchise and ignores the "Alien vs Predators" series completely. Apparently there is a blood-feud occurring between two different tribes of Predator - the "black" tribe and the "classic" form of Predators seen in the other films.

For the so called "Black Super Predators" in "Predators (2010)", the designers used the differences between a cassette tape and an ipod as an analogy in differentiating the new Predators from the classic. The Super Predators were designed as leaner and taller than the "classic" Predator design, with longer faces, tighter armor and with more swept back dreadlocks.

The  box packaging is consistent with the Hot Toys Predators: Royce packaging, consisting of an outer slipcase cover / sleeve with a red plastic sheet pasted over certain portions of the slipcase which has been cut out. Slide out the sleeve and the actual box is revealed.

Recent 1/6 Hauls II

Here's some of my recent 1/6 hauls. I'd posted some earlier and here's just a little more. I'll get into these in due time but in the meantime, just thought I'll share my stash :)

First up are three rather famous people. Well, just 1:6 scale versions of them anyway because these are as close as most of us can get to them. There's Will Smith as a CIA field operator. In the 2003 action-adventure-thriller film "Bad Boys II" - directed by Michael Bay, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and starring Martin Lawrence and Will Smith - Mike (Smith) and Marcus (Lawrence), along with their voluntary SWAT team, conduct an assault on a drug lord in Cuba wearing a somewhat similar attire.

Then there's Nicolas Cage as seen in "Face/Off", a 1997 action film directed by John Woo, starring John Travolta as FBI Special Agent Sean Archer and Nicolas Cage as Freelance terrorist Castor Troy.

The third figure is a War Journalist who bears some resemblance to Matt Damon, recently seen in "Green Zone", the 2010 action thriller war film starring Matt Damon as Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller on the hunt for WMDs (Weapons of Mass Destruction) in Iraq, March 2003.

Dragon EOD "William" in full bomb suit REVIEW III

A bomb suit or Blast Suit is a heavy suit of personal armor designed to withstand the force released from a bomb. It is also sometimes referred to as a Demon suit due to the number of people who are killed in the suit. In contrast to ballistic armors, which primarily focus on protecting the torso and head, a bomb suit must protect all parts of the body equally, since a bomb's force always impacts the entire body.

This is the Dragon Models (DML) 1/6 scale 12-inch US Army EOD Squad Leader - Operation Iraqi Freedom - "William" (Sergeant First Class) boxed set with William fully suited up in his bomb suit - a SRS-5 (Search and Reconnaissance Suit Model 5) which is considered the light suit version. Scroll down for pictures of this EOD bomb suit with alternate black helmet version.

Suiting up Dragon EOD "William" with the SRS-5 REVIEW II

continued from an earlier post...

Having seen the contents of the Dragon Models (DML) 1/6 scale 12-inch US Army EOD Squad Leader - Operation Iraqi Freedom - "William" (Sergeant First Class) boxed set, here's a post of the Dragon Sergeant First Class William (Jeremy Renner?) putting on the SRS-5 EOD bomb suit.

EOD operators gear up in the Search and Reconnaissance Suit Model 5 (SRS-5) to conduct render-safe action. The SRS-5 provides maximum protection against bomb threats, and there are a total of three protective layers to the suit: a Body Cooling System lowers the temperature of the innermost layer, known as the cooling suit; a Biological-Chemical Barrier Suit protects them from contamination; and the outer-most layer protects against blasts and fragmentation in the event of an explosion.

Dragon did not include a step-by-step instructions on how to put on the SRS-5 bomb disposal outfit so I thought I'll document the process to the best of my ability :)

Inception 12-inch Figures: TWO heads are better than ONE

LEO and BEHOLD!

Since the announcement earlier (see my post HERE) by VTS Virtual Toys that they will be releasing 1/6 scale figures inspired by the film "Inception", another company has come out and given their interpretation of their Dominic Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) the Extractor head sculpt and this one is SWEET!

This new head sculpt of Leonardo DiCaprio as Dominic Cobb, the Extractor is being released by Nobody Toys and aptly called "Dreamcatcher". Kind of remind me of the other Leonardo DiCaprio movie as well "Catch Me if You Can", a 2002 American biopic-crime film based on the life of Frank Abagnale Jr., who, before his 19th birthday, successfully conned millions of dollars by posing as a Pan American World Airways pilot, a Georgia doctor and Louisiana attorney and parish prosecutor.

Dragon EOD Squad Leader Sergeant First Class "William" REVIEW 1

This is the recently released Dragon Models (DML) 1/6 scale 12-inch US Army EOD Squad Leader - Operation Iraqi Freedom - "William" (Sergeant First Class). "William" depicts a US Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squad Leader during Operation Iraqi Freedom. After the success of the Academy Award-winning 2009 American war film "The Hurt Locker", about a three-man United States Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team during the Iraq War, Dragon was quick to jump on the bandwagon and hope to catch the wave of popularity and demand for figures related to the film.

The box cover shows the figure clad in a bomb suit. The back of the box shows the same figure also wearing the newer ACU (Army Combat Uniform), with older style Interceptor body armor in woodland camouflage and helmet with woodland cover.

Skyblade III - the SAF's eye in the sky

Singapore's Armed Forces (otherwise known as the SAF) are now equipped with their own UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) which can be man-packed, assembled and flown to allow reconnaissance troops to beam real-time video images beyond a soldier's line of vision. Dubbed the Skyblade III (I and II were developed earlier but never field tested), these made-in-Singapore mini spy planes are battery-operated, portable with a wing span of 2.6m when assembled and can stay in the air for up to an hour with a range of about 8km.

Soldiers from the 3rd Battalion Singapore Infantry Regiment (3 SIR) showed off the Skyblade III in a military exercise last week where enemy positions were sent via video images to ground commanders so as to allow them to use the up-to-date information to the best of their ability.
