Review Square Enix Play Arts Kai RoboCop 2014 version 1.0 - super-human cyborg back in action

"Dead or alive, you're coming with me!"

RoboCop is a 2014 American science fiction action film directed by José Padilha. It is a remake of the 1987 film of the same name and reboot of the RoboCop franchise. The film stars Joel Kinnaman in the title role, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson. For me, it's not a classic like Paul Verhoeven's 1987 original as it lacks the social satire (and violence) of the original film. The 1987 RoboCop showed the audience why RoboCop was needed: the future world was full of violence and crime and hopelessness, and needed someone / something to give the citizens hope that things could get better, crime could be dealt with effectively and justice could be served. This 2014 version of RoboCop showed a very sleek looking future metropolis where everything looked rather rosy and efficient, and questions the need for a cyborg cop to enforce the law.

I still liked the new interpretations of the RoboCop suit and how it differs from the original version while trying to retain some similarity / familiarity. I think the original RoboCop has its pros and it will always be a classic. This newer version / reboot is a nice attempt but I doubt we'll be seeing any sequels. I recently got this Square Enix Play Arts Kai RoboCop 2014 version 1.0 23 cm tall (9 inches) action figure because I wanted an updated and improved (?) version of this cyborg cop since I already have quite a collection of the classic 1987 version. You can see some of the pictures of my RoboCop collection HERE.

Square Enix released three different Play Arts Kai RoboCop action figures recently: the classic RoboCop from 1987 which was too skinny for my liking and the shoulder armor jut out so much it almost covers his face from the sides – LOL; RoboCop version 1.0 from the 2014 film, which is the one I got, looks closest to the original in terms of color application; and the final version, RoboCop 3.0 which is in all black because Raymond Sellars (played by Michael Keaton, who was also the 1989 "all black" Batman) wanted to "Make him more tactical. Let's go with black."

The box packaging is nice and futuristic looking in design and all the parts are kept in one main tray without twisty ties for easy access.

Below the main tray there's also a display stand included for more dramatic action poses if you so choose

This is my very first Square Enix Play Arts Kai 23 cm tall (9 inches) action figure. I have also pre-ordered the Batman: Arkham Origins Batman (preview pictures HERE) and Deathstroke (previewed HERE) based on the impressive preview pictures I've seen and am now waiting for their release in July (projected). Here's Square Enix Play Arts Kai RoboCop 2014 version 1.0 figure right out of the box. I love the use of metallic paint to make RoboCop look shiny and realistic when in fact he's made entirely of plastic.

RoboCop (Joel Kinnaman) carries a customized pistol, which Mattox (Jackie Earle Haley), OmniCorp armorer and RoboCop's trainer, called the "TSR 66", as his main sidearm in the film. The pistol is a Beretta with a custom shell that was created using a 3D printer. Square Enix included both stored (holstered) and unholstered versions for their Play Arts Kai RoboCop 2014 version 1.0

RoboCop uses a customized SMG in the film as his main firearm. Mattox (Jackie Earle Haley), OmniCorp armorer and RoboCop's trainer in the movie, states it is chambered for the .50 Beowulf caliber. The weapon has a custom shell like the TSR 66 pistol and lacks a trigger guard. Both stored (holstered) and unholstered versions are also included.

NEXT: See how the weapons are stored on RoboCop, something that was kept consistent with the original 1987 film.
