Review 1: Hot Toys Sucker Punch 1/6th scale Babydoll (Emily Browning) 12" Collectible Figure

Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Series MMS157 Sucker Punch 1/6th scale Babydoll (approx 12-inch) Female Collectible Figure was released in May 2012 to much hype and fanfare. She was hot and all the reviews were good. I missed out on this figure due to other commitments and was glad to be able to get her again this year, at a much lower price then the original. In fact, I was able to get both Hot Toys Sucker Punch female figures for the price of one which just makes me one happy collector :) See my haul of September 2014 posted HERE

Sucker Punch is a 2011 action-fantasy thriller film about the fantasies of a young woman who is committed to a mental institution by her abusive stepfather. Retreating to an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the mental facility. It was written by Zack Snyder and Steve Shibuya and directed by Snyder. The film features an ensemble cast starring Emily Browning as the central character (Babydoll), Abbie Cornish (as Sweet Pea) and Oscar Isaac (as Blue).

I liked how the movie drew inspiration from the Japanese anime / manga genre where the star of the film is usually a female (heroine) who kicks ass and take names, no quarter asked and none given (Ghost in the Shell Motoko Kusanagi - pictures HERE and Appleseed Deunan Knute - pictures HERE and HERE comes to mind). Plus in the film, Babydoll fights giant samurais in feudal Japan, then teams up with her fellow dancers to take on steampunk inspired World War I German soldiers, dragons, and killer robots on an alien world, all on their quest for freedom. And Babydoll does all these while dressed in a provocative schoolgirl costume, much like the gals in the Japanese shōjo manga series "Sailor Moon" but more closely associated with Seya in "Blood: The Last Vampire", where she wears almost the exact same schoolgirl outfit whilst wielding a katana (check out preview pictures of Phicen Limited Artistic Interpretation 1:6 scale The Last Female Student Collector Figure HERE).

I like the design of the box the Sucker Punch female figure comes in. The box is not as sturdy (thick) as I would like but the design appeals to me. And it's held together by a elastic garter strap and a S hook, much like those you see in women's undergarment. You have to unhook it to get to the goodies inside. Cheeky!

Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Series MMS157 Sucker Punch: 1/6th scale Babydoll Collectible Figure comes with: Authentic and detailed fully realized likeness of Emily Browning as Babydoll (Each piece of head sculpt is specially hand-painted) in the Sucker Punch movie and stands approximately 28 cm tall with Newly developed body with over 30 points of articulations. She has Real-like long golden implanted curly hair, Three (3) pairs of inter-changeable palms with straps on right palms including: One (1) pair of relaxed palms, One (1) pair for holding guns, One (1) pair for holding Japanese Katana (samurai sword).

The Hot Toys Sucker Punch Babydoll instruction sheet tells you how to put on the hairband and scabbard (sheath) for her sword. Hot Toys also advises against scratching and damaging the pattern engraved on the blade of the katana.

Hot Toys Sucker Punch Babydoll 1/6th scale accessories include: One (1) magazine gun with silencer and sight, One (1) map holder with strap, One (1) Japanese-styled metal Katana with sheath and carrying strap (rope), One (1) black-colored hair band, One (1) headset, One (1) key with neck chain, One (1) pistol with accessories, and Two (2) extra pistol magazines

Baby Doll (Emily Browning) uses a suppressed Heckler & Koch MP7A1 with a tiny red dot sight, a flashlight, and two magazines taped together during the assault on the dragon's lair. Hot Toys has replicated the MP7 in 1/6 scale with extendable stock, optic sight, suppressor and sling.

The 1/6th scale map holder can be opened (no map inside) and comes with carrying strap

Hot Toys Sucker Punch Babydoll (Emily Browning) 1/6 katana and sheath with rope. The katana is one of the two main weapons Baby Doll uses throughout the movie. This weapon is mostly used in the Japanese-esque universe where she battles giant demon samurai. The katana has a wheel tsuba with flowers and engraved images of frightened / happy bunnies and vines with berries on the blade. The brown sheath is decorated with golden snowflakes,

In the third-tier 'dream world', the Wiseman (Scott Glenn) presents Baby Doll with her weapons, one of which is a nickel plated engraved M1911A1 pistol with spare pistol magazines (and small jewelry attachments - trinkets attached by cord to the lanyard ring). There are engravings on the pistol slide. The engraving are of the same design as the Katana: bunny, vines, and berries but with one difference - there is a cartoon capital "B" at the start of the pattern which is the first initial of her name. The 4 charms attached to the Lanyard Ring are: a bunny head, an hour glass, a baby's bottle and a skull.

Besides the black-colored hair band, headset, and key with neck chain (picture above), a figure display stand with Babydoll nameplate and movie logo is also included. Note the spare hands mentioned earlier.

Sucker Punch Babydoll (Emily Browning) costume / outfit consists of: One (1) set of sailor-styled dark-blue shirt with tie and belt, as well as skirt, One (1) pair of long black socks, One (1) pair of dark-blue high heels. She also has a shoulder holster for her pistol and spare pistol magazines. Her sword sheath is attached to a rope and slung over her right shoulder.

There's always been a debate on "dolls versus action figures" and I've also weighed in on the topic (see my toy blog post "I collect Action Figures! And here are some of them" HERE). To me, Hot Toys Sucker Punch 1/6 scale Babydoll is an action figure even though she's all dolled up (pun intended). Emily Browning herself said she was glad to show that a bunch of women absolutely can be the leads in a kick-ass action movie without sacrificing their femininity.

Even after two years, the figure still looks just as good and even if you were to get it today, you won't be disappointed as the standard was very high that even by today's standards, she still looks stunning!

Check out the close-up pictures of the Hot Toys 1/6 scale Emily Browning as Babydoll head sculpt. Just as the actress said in an interview: I also loved the idea of physically looking like the stereotypical sweet school girl, I think Zack [Synder] totally flipped that on it's head. [Babydoll's] personality is not what you would expect. Maybe that's one of the sucker punches: you see this sweet little girl and then [with] her first line into the film she's holding a knife up to some guy's throat saying, "Let her go, pig."

I think there was enough of a human element to make this a good, if not a great film.
